Pirate Radio Discussion

Post by Gary Edwards »

On Thursday 7th May, 2015, a panel discussion was held about the early days of urban music / pirate radio in the UK, in the Millennium Point Campus of Birmingham City University. Early pioneers, who championed black broadcasting the UK, kindly gave their time to speak to students and staff in a fascinating session (which coincided with the UK elections).

The Panel included Simon Schoolboy Philips (Choice Fm/Radio 1/Capitol Radio), Frenchie (PCRL/SCR/Fresh FM /Radio Sandwell), Freakie Dee (Radio WM/Buzz FM) and Dave VJ (KissFM/ChoiceFM/MiSoul). The wide ranging discussion included the UK’s urban underground music scene in the 80s and 90s – and looked back at the challenges faced by illegal broadcasters.

The session was arranged to promote the ‘Masters of the Airwaves’ book about the early stages of urban UK music radio, which was compiled by original Kiss FM DJs/Broadcasters Lindsay Wesker and Dave VJ. The book is highly recommended and includes contributors such as: Jazzie B OBE, David Rodigan MBE, Trevor Nelson MBE and Norman Jay MBE.
