Re: Steve Merrick's drinking

Yeah, it was O'Neills, altho there's another Irish pub/restaurant on Broad St now called Oh Velvet, on the same side of the road going towards the Five Ways. Ideas for that long lost drink with Steve maybe?

Re: Steve Merrick's drinking

I'm indebted to you again KR! Also I'd vaguely heard of the Starfighters but I didn't know they were Brummies! My wife and I have been to Brum on the train today and I've had some of the best colcannon I've ever had in an Irish pub on Broad Street!

Re: Steve Merrick's drinking

The last person I'd associate with that song would be Roger Glover, but they said likewise about Bowie/Laughing Gnome! You learn something new each day, thanks for the info KR! Nick Meanwell - he always used that song just before the 12.00 news to sign off with. He also used a version of the song 'C...

Re: Steve Merrick's drinking

A very good point Rick. The music does indeed come second on the radio today, or even third behind the personalities and the adverts. Only one station that I can think of that's not the case that's still broadcasting today - albeit not on AM, FM or DAB is the old rebel herself, Caroline.

Re: Steve Merrick's drinking

Rick - And all they seem to do nowadays is make controversial comments on the air like Chris Moyles and that right wing extremist yarddog Gaunt person on Talksport. Come back Stevie M, all is forgiven! Coming back to xmas 1982, that 'Love is all, love is all, at the butterfly ball' song was played a...

Re: Steve Merrick's drinking

There were very marked diffrerences in the music policies of both SA/EST and County/Wulfrun Sound. Whereas SA's policy was of a format that at the time didn't exist in England - album rock, County Radio were much more poppy, and when you're a schoolkid, that's what you want to hear on your radio. Al...

Re: Steve Merrick's drinking

Whychbury Court's a very good site (near Whiteheath) and would get you the coverage that you'd need, but I'd imagine the signal from there wouldn't make Coseley/Princes End over the other side of Turners Hill and Dudley. But Blackheath, Halesowen, Oldbury, Tividale, West Brom should be okay. as woul...

Re: Steve Merrick's drinking

I say about the drinking because a) he seemed to do a lot of repetition on air (doing dedications, whats ons, adverts etc. and b) his adverts for the 'free and easy' nights down the boozer, which according to Steve were six nights out of seven! I'm not scoffing incidentally, I myself am a former alc...

Steve Merrick's drinking

I never would have thought it listening to him in the 80s on County. But I was only a naive little kid! So exactly how many of those Sunday evening stints did he do kali-ed then? And could anybody please satisfy my curiosity and tell me what Mr. Merrick's up to these days as I've spent almost all da...

Re: Happy memories!

That's exactly what I liked about Caroline at that time Keith, album rock radio was avant-garde as far as British audiences were concerned.
