“Pirate radio on the air at weekend”
Pirate radio station, Wulfrun Sound takes to the air at the weekend in defiance of Home Office regulations. The station, which aims to entertain and inform on a shoestring budget, will cover the town and make itself heard all over the Black Country in good conditions.
It will broadcast from a secret location on alternative Sundays, starting this week, between 2pm and 6pm. Station manager Mr Mike Johns is among those who appose the present law, which permits commercial radio only if it is granted a franchise by the Independent Broadcasting Authority.
“We can run a radio (station) cheaply and without interference said Mr Johns. We agree there should be guidelines, but we should have a much freer system”.
Beacon Radio spokesperson Mr Peter Noyes-Thomas does not agree. “Control of broadcasting is essential to maintain high standards. The aim of the IBA is to provide good coverage with good reception”.
