Thought I'd bump this thread to point out we have added a Wulfrun Sound page to the site today.

http://www.thepiratearchive.net/wulfrun_sound.html

They were a temporary spin off from UK in 1983.

On the last UK update, there were photo's of Paul Johnson on Sedgley Beacon added:

http://www.thepiratearchive.net/uk/Paul ... eacon2.jpg
http://www.thepiratearchive.net/uk/Paul ... eacon3.jpg

Some people have said it does not look like The Beacon, but if not, then where is it?

Does anyone have any idea where it might be?

Does anyone know who the other person in the photo is?

...and to the mystery person who uploaded the photo's, many thanks!

There has been an update to the UK Radio page today, with three new recordings including UK spin offs Radio Orion and Phoenix Radio.

There are also some information sheets added, one of which is from Radio Orion.

Anyway great job lads :)

I came upon this site by accident and want to share my thoughts as I worked under the pseudonym of David Jarvis for about six years between 1978 and around 1984. Firstly I can confirm that the picture of Paul Johnson up a tree was definitely taken on Sedgley Beacon in the West Midlands and that the other person in the picture is Mike Harris, who presented on UK Radio for a long time.

I don't want to focus on Paul Johnson's passing as it was extremely sad and had a big impact on his family and still does this many years on. There is no doubt that he had many demons that in the end overwhelmed him, but what I can say is that he lived for the idea that anybody should be able to get access to the airwaves, and that radio could be a real grass roots affair. He would have loved the idea of the internet and the way it is opening up new opportunities for communication and the distribution of music and ideas. It's a shame that he wasn't able to be around to see the coming of internet radio, which I believe will transform the way we listen to music. Already the hand held iPhones are being used to distribute radio via 3G on largely reliable networks. I don't think that there would really have been a place for a station like UK Radio in the digital age, at least not via traditional platforms of distribution. But certainly with a themed playlist and a strong identity it could have made the move to the internet.

I'm not going to talk about UK Radio but just briefly mention Wulfrun Sound, which everybody involved felt was something that had such potential. With Mike Johns there was a vision that the station could be really snappy, and not be dogged by the issues surrounding non live radio. Almost all of the news bulletins were recorded I think, in a flat in the Heath Town area of Wolverhampton, and ferried straight over to the transmission site within minutes of being finished. This was to give as much of a 'live' feel as possible. The programmes themselves were also recorded as near to transmission as possible, and the station got out well over Wolverhampton and The Black Country. There was a real commitment to this station at the time, and although its life span was really very brief it certainly had a professionalism that had been lacking prior to this.

Anyway I don't focus too much on things that have gone before but when I do think of those days I remember it with fondness. Technology was crude in real terms, but there was a sense of being maverick that only really comes with the freshness of youth. There were so many interesting characters for sure, and of course light hearted rivalry between pure 'pop' stations such as UK and Wulfrun, and the alternative stations who wanted to do do something that wasn't being offered by the mainstream at the time.
